Sprial Curls for Short Hair Tutorial

Last week I was 'Signature Straight,' and this week I'm 'Spiral Curls,' for the #downfor30 John Frieda Frizz Ease challenge! Just because I have short hair, doesn't mean I can't rock the spiral curls and beachy wave look. Below I'll show you the steps I take to get this look.

Here's a list of products I used:
 - Wide tooth comb
 - John Frieda Frizz Ease Go Curlier
 - Blow dryer with diffuser (diffuser optional)
 - Hair clip
 - Curling iron

1 - Comb through clean and towel tried hair with a wide tooth comb, adjusting part to where it usually falls.

2 - Spritz John Frieda Frizz Ease from roots to ends (this product discontinued, so try this version). The bottle suggests starting with 10-12 sprays, more or less depending on your hair length and thickness. I always like to scrunch my hair after applying product for curls, to help the curls form. The above picture shows you the slight wave I have in my hair without blow drying and straightening.
3 - Gently blow dry hair with diffuser (I didn't have a diffuser available, so I used my blow dryer on the lowest setting, and kept scrunching as I went along).

4 - After hair is completely dry, go through small to medium sections (depending on how much help with curls your hair needs) and use the curling iron to add spirals. I used a small spiral iron, in which I have to use my hand to wrap the hair around (this takes practice to do without burning fingers!). The below pictures shows you how my hair looks just after drying without using a round brush (left side) and how it looks after using the curling iron in it (right side).

5 - I took small sections of my hair and positioned the iron behind the section of hair, and then wrapped the hair away from my face.
6 - After curling, you can comb through curls to loosen them up and make them look more natural.

Voila! Spiral Curls for Short Hair is complete!

'Signature Straight' Hair Style Tutorial with John Frieda Frizz Ease

Finally - it's 80 degrees out! Well, technically not yet, but the forecast for metro Detroit today says 80 degrees, so I'm pretty excited. I'm a girl who loves the hot weather. I don't worry about humidity because I know I have the right hair products to ensure a good hair day no matter what the weather is!

Not just for the humid weather, but year round, I turn to John Frieda's Frizz Ease products to tame fly-aways and keep my hair from frizzing. One essential product for me is John Frieda's Straight Fixation styling cream. I use this daily to get my 'signature straight' hair style. Here are the steps I take to get this look:

Tools and products I use:
 - round brush
 - clip(s)
 - comb
 - hair dryer
 - flat iron
 - Straight Fixation styling cream
1 - Comb through clean hair with wide tooth comb and part your hair where it usually falls or off to the side.
2 - Apply a dime size amount of Frizz Ease Straight Fixation to your hair and evenly distribute with a comb (use more or less depending on the thickness and length of hair)
3 - Divide your hair into sections with your clip(s) (I usually start with one side and section into 3 parts at a time)
4 - Use hair dryer and round brush to blow dry each section at a time. I use my brush to roll my hair straight out, away from my face, and then under, making sure the hair dryer stays pointed at the round brush and hair until the very end, so the ends are straight.
5 - After all the sections are done, I like to take the front chunk of my hair, on both sides of my part (maybe still a little damp), and blow dry it forward, and then re-part it. My hair dresser gave me this trick. It helps to give lift and body to the front portion of my hair, so it doesn't lay flat against my forehead.
6 - When my hair is completely dry I go through the sections again (without clipping) with my flat iron. I don't use a very hot iron. I usually set my temperature to around 250-300 degrees.
7 - Voila! My 'signature straight' hair style.

Now that summer is creeping up, everyone should be armed with Frizz Ease products to help fight the humidity and frizz! Just because it’s summer it doesn’t mean you can’t wear your hair down and proud! Show off your fierce hairstyles on Instagram with the  #downfor30 hashtag for the chance to win an EPIC NYC adventure. Each post with the #downfor30 & #sweeps hashtag (up to one a day) earns you a chance to win.

The amazing prize package includes the following:

Lots of old Hollywood glamour tonight! Adele was styled by Michael Ashton created a voluminous half-up do that complemented her class black Jenny Packham gown.

In order to recreate this look, follow these steps from Michael using products from John Frieda.
1. Towel dry wet hair, removing excess moisture before working through the NEW Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray ($9.99 at drugstores) on mid-lengths and ends.
2. Flip hair over with your head between your knees, blasting hot air down the hair shaft for instant lift at the roots and thickness through the rest of the hair.
3. When hair is about 80% dry, flip your hair back over and take large sections, smoothing them with a medium sized round brush. Pay particular attention to the ends to ensure they are bouncy and luscious.
4. Flip hair over with your head between your knees, blasting hot air down the hair shaft for instant lift at the roots and thickness through the rest of the hair.
5. When hair is about 80% dry, flip your hair back over and take large sections, smoothing them with a medium sized round brush. Pay particular attention to the ends to ensure they are bouncy and luscious.
6. Section the hair into quarters and apply a medium-large curling iron to each section to achieve a contemporary and feminine texture. Next set in hot rollers. Once cool, carefully brush through hair with a natural bristle brush.
7. Continue for the remaining three sections, ensuring that as you have finished curling each section you pin it in a barrel curl using a sectioning clip while it cools and sets.
8. After 5-10 minutes, remove the sectioning clips, gently tousle hair. Pull half of the hair back and tease at the crown, securing pieces together in the back of the head. Leave down two small sections of hair to frame the face. Mist Luxurious Volume All-Day Hold Hairspray ($5.99 at drugstores) for a long-lasting finish.

Stacey Keibler's old Hollywood glamour look was styled by Robert Vetica, using Carol's Daughter products. He used the Monoi & Macadamia collections to create her loo

To get the look:
1 - Robert started out with wet hair, adding a few drops of the Carol’s Daughter Monoi Oil Sacred Strengthening Serum ($30) to give Stacy’s hair the strength and flexibility it needed for the initial blowdry.
2 - After blowdrying, Robert applied the Carol’s Daughter Macadamia Heat Protection Serum ($18) before curling her hair into loose waves and setting it with the Carol’s Daughter Macadamia Heat Styling Hair Spray ($17).
3 - Following, Robert brushed out Stacy’s curls and swept hair into a loose faux bob, finishing off the look with the Carol’s Daughter Finishing Shine Mist ($18) to give her hair a lasting, red-carpet shine.

Renee Zellweger was sytled by Robert Vetica using Wella Professionals

Hair Look:
The chignon is very classic, sophisticated chic, and red carpet elegant.

Step-By-Step Styling:
1.      First, wet hair was prepped with small amount of Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier ($16) Style Primer
2.      Then, section by section blow dry with a large round bristle brush and back comb each section lightly.
3.      Once the hair is completely dry, split into two pieces and tuck into a low chignon securing with bobby pins.
4.      Spray the pinned hair lightly with Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight ($13) to create shine.
5.      Finally, set the look with Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray ($15).

Va-va-voom Isla Fisher! She was styled by Marcus Francis using Wella Professionals too!

Inspiration:
Marcus explained “I wanted Isla's personality to really show by keeping her hair sleek and down, it made the look feel young, sexy, and fun, just like her. Having a no part half-up, half-down would help to modernize the hairstyle.”  A strapless dress doesn't always mean the hair must be worn up. In this case Isla showed off her red, shiny locks which really popped against her blue dress by wearing it down.

Step-By-Step Styling:
1.      From wet hair, apply Wella Professional Flowing Form Smoothing Balm ($14) section by section and blow dry with a medium size round brush.
2.      Create your part for the section you're pulling back by starting at the arch of each eyebrow, and continue back to the crown.
3.      Spray Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray ($14) before you flat iron each section from roots to ends.
4.      Secure the section pulled back by using a bobby pin on each side at the crown. Slide the pin underneath the top layer of the hair to anchor without slipping.
5.      Use a quarter size amount of Wella Professionals Mirror Polish Shine Serum ($16) and take through with your fingers to seal the ends and adding shine.
6.      Finally use Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray ($15) with focus at the front and section pulled back for added hold.

Carly Rae Jepson by Harry Josh at the Billboard Music Awards

I love Carly Rae Jepson's song 'Call Me Maybe.' It's so catchy and my husband and I always sing to it when it comes on in the car!

I was really excited to find out that John Frieda stylist Harry Josh styled this pop star's hair for the Billboard red carpet. He gave her a super sleek rock n roll blow out...here's how:

"Movement is key," says Josh who applied John Frieda Full Repair Style Revival Heat Activated Styling Spray ($9.99) to Carly Rae's wet hair before blow drying to ensure her final look would have shine and a flexible hold that will last throughout the night.

After blowdrying he flat ironed her hair section by section. "The heat from the flat iron is what helped to lock in shine. Style Revival, which is formulated with lightweight Inca Ichi Oil, helped to protect Carly Rae's hair from the potential damage from the high heat of the flat iron."

To finish off the look, Harry used a touch of John Frieda Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Thermal Protection Formula ($9.99) on the ends to seal in shine.

Taylor Schilling's Look from John Frieda

You all know I'm a huge John Frieda and Harry Josh fan, so I couldn't help but post this release. Here's how Taylor Shilling got the look!

THE LOOK: Sleek, straight, and simple.

THE INSPIRATION: “Taylor was ready for a new look and I thought a bob would really compliment her gorgeous face,” said Harry Josh, John Frieda International Creative Consultant. “This sleek bob is chic enough for the red carpet and sophisticated enough for everyday wear.”

HOW TO GET THE LOOK: Harry Josh, John Frieda International Creative Consultant, cut six inches off of Taylor’s hair, giving her a sleek bob. After he cut her hair, Harry spritzed John Frieda Frizz-Ease 3-Day Straight throughout damp hair to ensure her blowout would be straight and frizz-free. An at-home alternative to in-salon keratin treatments, this heat-activated spray wraps individual strands with a unique blend of polymers and keratin proteins, sealing in straight style with the help of a flat iron.

Harry began blowing out her hair with a boar-bristle Mason Pearson brush, carefully straightening each section at a time. Next, he went over each piece with a comb and a flat iron, ensuring every hair stayed sleek.

Harry gave her a deep side part and tucked one front piece behind her ear. The result: a chic, sleek red carpet look.

SAG Beauty - Rose Byrne's Red Carpet Hair

Check out Rose Byrne's new look debut on the SAG Awards Red Carpet. Her stylist...my favorite guy - John Frieda International Creative Consultant Harry Josh!

Harry Josh says that her new look is "70's inspired with a modern twist. Think Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface meets a modern day Anna Wintour."

Here is how Harry styled Rose's new 70's inpsired bob to go with her chic white Elie Saab jumpsuit for the red carpet:

Step 1 - Saturate the Roots with a Volumizer
"I needed to get a lot of lift at the roots. Without that, the look would just fall flat," says Harry. On wet hair, he applied tons of John Frieda Full Repair Root Lift Foam ($6.99) which not only gave him the weightless lift that he needed, but also helped to protect against damage caused by heat styling.

Step 2 - Protect the Roots
Harry applied the Full Repair Perfect Ends Deep Infusion ($9.99) to smooth the ends and make sure they looked healthy and groomed since her new cut is so blunt.

Step 3 - Blow Dry with a Round Brush
Section by section, Harry used a natural bristle brush and angled the blow dryer down to get maximum shine.

Step 4 - Place Velco Rollers at the Crown
Harry used the rollers to lock in the volume.

"It's the epitome of chic, just like Rose." - Harry Josh

John Frieda Makeover in NYC

This week I traveled to NYC for the experience of a lifetime. Thursday I was on set all day for a John Frieda makeover video shoot. And not only was I on set, I was participating! I was one of the five bloggers selected for a personalized beauty and style makeover by John Frieda and Glam Stylists.

I got to meet and receive a hair color and cut consultation (behind the scenes and on camera) with the amazingly talented Mr. Harry Josh, John Frieda Celebrity Stylist. I also got styled by Nola, Fashion Editor at Glam.com and India, Beauty Editor at Glam.com. Here is how the past few days played out…

Wednesday was filled with shopping, manicures and finally our initial hair consultation with Harry. Elisa from NYSpender.com, Heather from BehindtheLashes.com, Stef & Tyna from WeHeartThis.com and I all met with Harry individually. First, I have to say, Harry’s enthusiasm and energy is so contagious. He asked us if we had any limitations to what we would do with our hair and I was so mesmerized by him I just said ‘I’ll do anything!’

He talked to the other girls about the John Frieda Precision Foam Colour they should use and how he wanted his team to cut their hair. When he got to me, he decided he wanted to keep my highlights the same, and wanted to focus on adding some shine back to my hair along with a new cut.

Thursday morning we all met at the salon at 7am to start production. After the camera crew set up and a lot of coffee, we started filming our before shots and consultations with Harry. The other girls also filmed themselves applying the Precision Foam Color to their hair, to demonstrate how easy the application process is.

My segment focused on fixing my dull hair. Having highlights, styling every day and well water has really taken a toll on my hair. Harry decided to use John Frieda Clear Shine on me, which is a glazing treatment that adds shine and smoothness to hair. As for the cut…he was thinking Edie Sedgwick inspired…and the stylists got to work!

After washing my hair with the Full Repair line to help with dryness, Blake, Harry’s assistant, applied Clear Shine from roots to ends and let it sit for 5 minutes. After rinsing Clear Shine out Blake started cutting. I made sure to pay good attention to how he dried my hair so I could easily do it again myself. He explained how to get a dramatic side part (new to me) and how to use a smaller round brush to get ends straighter, avoiding a flat iron.

After I was cut and styled, it was time to get my make up done. India worked with the makeup artist, Nam Vo, to create a mod Edie Segdwick inspired look for me. Black out eyes, long lashes, shiny nude lips and a beauty mark completed my face.

Next was wardrobe. The fall fashion trend I was chosen to represent was ‘Lace’ – yes please! Nola picked out a black lace dress for me, along with ridiculously high (and sexy) suede turquoise heels for a pop of color. I had to do a couple laps around the salon in the heels just to make sure I could get around okay in them.

Makeover complete! The Clear Shine made a world of difference to my hair. When I returned home I had people ask me if they colored it because the color looked so much healthier and shiny. I want to say thank you to Harry Josh and his team of talented stylists and to the Glam team for making us all look fabulous!
