Protect Your Skin on SUNday with Neutrogena Sunscreen

We have a lot of reasons to celebrate today! Yesterday was the first day of Summer, and today is International Sun-Day! Today is the Sunday closest to the summer solstice, making it a special SUNday to celebrate the nearest star in the Universe, the Sun!

But before you go out and celebrate, make sure you are well protected from this star! I've been in extreme Outer Banks, North Carolina heat all week, and have been layering on Neutrogena sunscreen. I'm guilty of not wanting to wear high SPF sunscreen in the past because I was afraid I wouldn't get 'tan.' Well, that mind set has gone out the window now that I'm older (and I like to think wiser, too) and I worry about longer term skin damage and wrinkles.

I stocked up on SPF 50+ for this trip and pretty much forced it on everyone in my family. Especially when traveling south, the sun is so much stronger, and it never seems like you can enough sunscreen on. There is nothing worse than a sunburn on vacation! My family has been using the below sunscreens all weekend and we've all stayed sunburn free while playing in and out of the ocean and pool.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid SPF 70
Ultra Sheer Liquid SPF 70
This goes on underneath your moisturizer and can be worn daily. I LOVE the way this soaks into my skin. I also have extremely sensitive skin, and this non-comedogenic lotion hasn't caused any breakouts or flare ups of my rosacea. I've been putting this on my face, neck and chest every morning when I wake up. You never know when you're going to eat outside or drink coffee on the balcony and the sun will reach your face. It has a sheer, not greasy, finish, and almost looks like it could be a skin corrector. Other benefits include: water resistant for up to 80 minutes, Helioplex technology, oil-free, and PABA free.

Neutrogena Ultra Dry-Touch SPF 55
Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 55
I loaded up with the Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 55 before I even stepped outside. Being pregnant has made me even more cautious about protecting my skin. This kept me burn free but also allowed me to still get a bit of color. This sunscreen is super lightweight and absorbs quickly. I also didn't have any problems with using it on my sensitive skin (it helps that it's non-comedogenic). It's also oil-free, PABA free, and uses the Helioplex technology like the Ultra Sheer Liquid.

Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 50+
Beach Defense Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+
This stick is genius, especially when you don't want to get your hands sticky with sunscreen. It makes for easy, clean application. My niece and nephew also thought it was pretty 'funny' since it looks like deodorant, and made them a little less unhappy about sunscreen re-applications :) This stick didn't absorb as quickly as the Ultra Sheer, but I felt like it was better to use before going into the ocean because it was a bit thicker. The water just ran right over it on our skin, and kept us well protected. Like the Ultra Sheer line, it's oil and PABA free. To top it off, this one smells a little fruity :)

Neutrogena sunscreens can be purchased online at Neutrogena.com or found at your local drugstores like CVS or Walgreens.

What's in my Beach Bag? Sun Bum SPF 30!

I definitely consider myself a 'Sun Bum' in the Michigan Spring/Summer time. My coworker always teases me because whenever the sun is out I can always be found working on our office deck. But I'm also very cautious to make sure I'm fully protected by sunscreen when outside.

Just the name of this sun protection line had me hooked. I received a sample of Sun Bum SPF 30 Continuous Spray and the lip balms to try out. I tried them out this past weekend while out on the lake and they kept both me and husband burn free! They are a new essential for my weekend beach bag.

The Continuous Spray sunscreen provided great coverage and made for easy application. I could even get my back covered without help! Sun Bum SPF 30 is water proof and sweat proof, paraben free, oil free and hypoallergenic. To top it off, it smells like the beach, coconut and sand. Retails for $15.99 and can be purchased online and at select retailers.

The lip balms are great too. Normally I'm not a fan of wax based lip balms, but this one goes on smooth and doesn't dry out lips or have a thick waxy feeling to it. It's super moisturizing! All of their fun flavors (my favorite so far is Banana) contain cocoa butter, and are PABA free. Other tasty flavors include Mango, Key Lime, Coconut, Pint Guava and Pomegranate. Sun Bum lip balms are $3.99 a piece and can be purchased online. These are steal for how moisturizing and tasty they are, with the added benefit of SPF.

Do you wear sunscreen? I hope everyone comments 'yes' below! Take my advice and wear your sunscreen...you'll thank me later!

Memorial Day Essentials

It's been a chilly Memorial Day weekend so far here in Michigan. But even though it's not bikini weather, don't forget to wear sunscreen! Here's my Memorial Day 'must have' list:

I like this sunscreen for my face because it doesn't break me out.
I have a long sleeve mullet dress that I'm obsessed with, kind of like a half maxi dress. I love the look of this maxi dress from JC Penney because it doesn't go all the way to the ground.
I practically live in jean jackets in the Spring and Fall. Definitely a necessity when it's only 60 degrees out.
Protect your eyes! These Ray Bans are on my wish list.

Doesn't have to be as fancy as this Lacoste one, but grab a beach blanket or towel and have a picnic in a park!

What are your Memorial Day weekend plans? Hopefully its sunny wherever you are!

Murad Oil-Free Sunscreen review

Murad Oil-Free Sunscreen-Broad Spectrum 30 PA+++ is not only helping to prevent future sun and free radical damage, but is also Oil-free which many of us look for in a sunscreen. I have used so many different oil-free sunscreens and always end up with breakouts the next day. Not this product! However; like all sunscreens...You really need to apply them throughout the day. This is VERY important! Because Murad Oil-Free sunscreen is so light-weight, you are able to do so without feeling as if you have just painted your face. Added bonus: it smells really good!

Hamptons Bound

I've had nothing but fun so far in NYC. The shopping, eating and sightseeing has been amazing, but there is one thing I've been missing...the water! I know I'm surrounded by it here, but it's different. I miss the Michigan Lakes! I think Mike was missing it too. So we decided to go on a road trip to get an H2O fix. We were Hamptons bound...

Sunny-side up skillet
First stop, breakfast. Once we picked up our sweet Malibu rental car (ha!) we stopped at Thomas's Ham & Eggery Diner. SO GOOD. This place was rocking so we took a seat at the bar. Great service, food and prices. All egg dishes are served in a skillet (pictured) and fresh muffins baked daily. Loved this touch of home cooking to kick off our road trip.
'Be a cow tipper' was on their tip jar
Second stop was for lunch (only a few hours later from breakfast :) We stopped at the Townline BBQ restaurant. You order at the counter and they bring you your food, fast. Highly recommend the pulled BBQ chicken sandwich.

Next stop, Napeague Beach. I swear this was a private beach we snuck on to. We parked of the high way and walked about .25 miles to the shore. We laid our towels down, covered ourselves in sunscreen, laid out until we couldn't stand the heat any longer, and then jumped into the water. Splashing in the waves reminded me of going to the Jersey Shore growing up.

Next stop was a ridiculous cool roadside restaurant called the Clam Bar. Fresh seafood served daily. I've been on such a seafood kick lately! We had the grilled tuna and lobster salad. SO FRESH. You can't get lobster like that in Michigan. Next stop...Montauk!!! I HAD to visit Montauk for all of my Revenge junkies!

Montauk Lighthouse
Montauk is a cute little beach time that turns into a party town at night. It's on very end of Long Island is super narrow. Arenas and boats on each side. As soon as we stepped out of the car I smelled salt water and I loved it.

After we indulged ourselves with Ben & Jerry's ice cream, we left Montauk to head home around 7pm and made it back to the Upper West Side in about 3 hours. It was an awesome trip to get a fix for some water fun, and to also see what the Hamptons hype was all about. Huge beautiful houses on the water, fun beachy restaurants with fresh seafood, and a fun flip flop-attire nightlife. I'd love to spend a weekend here again. Mike and I decided that it reminded us a lot of Up North Michigan, except 10 times more expensive to live...I think I'll stick with the Michigan Lakes for my water fix.

What's in my Beach Bag? - Jason Naturals SPF

Jason Family Naturals Sunblock SPF 45 kept me burn free this past weekend! I had no idea this company has been around since 1959. They have been a pioneer in the 'naturals' beauty department.

This non-greasy, water-resistant sunscreen smells so good. It's not overpowering, just a very fresh 'summery-beachy' smell. The Family Natural Sunblock protects skin from burn, and reduces harmful free radical damage caused by the sun's ultra-violet rays. It's enriched with Vitamin E, Shea Butter and Green tea extract. This is probably why it felt a little moisturizing as well.

My husband and I both used this and were out all day on Memorial Day. We reapplied probably 2-3x throughout the day and came away with no red. If you are in to organic and natural products, this is a good product to use when you're out in the sun. It retails for $11.95

You can find Jason Natural Products at Whole Foods and other health and natural food stores in the US and Canada, or by visiting www.jason-natural.com.

What's In My Beach Bag? - Australian Gold Sunscreen

Finally...nice weather in Michigan! We just had a beautiful weekend here. Sunny and in the 80s.

I'm still sporting my very pale skin from the winter, and wanted to make sure I was fully covered with sun protection while out this weekend. I did a great job protecting myself...except for my back. Never forget to put sunscreen on your back! I remembered an hour too late, and I'm paying for it with a burn. But luckily, the rest of me was well protected with Australian Gold this weekend.
I used Australian Gold Sheer Coverage all over my arms and legs, in SPF 15. It rubbed in evenly and smelled just wonderful. There is something about the smell of Australian Gold that reminds me of vacation and pina coladas. Yum. Every spot I applied this remained sunburn free. I applied once in the morning, a second coat in the afternoon, and was out in the sun probably for a total of 4 hours.

This also comes in a cute sample size, perfect for tossing in your purse or beach bag. I like to keep it in my every day purse in case of an emergency (for example: spontaneous dinner reservations out on a patio).
I also used Australian Gold SPF Spray Gel with Bronzer (both this weekend and in Florida a few month sago). Great protection with SPF 30 and even coverage. It's not like a self tanner where you have to make sure you apply even. This didn't streak at all and applied it fairly quickly. This also smelled delicious...not like self tanner at all!

One of the best things about Australian Gold (besides the smell) is the price. You can find it at your local CVS and at high end salons.

What's in my Beach Bag? Sunscreen!

This post is majorly delayed...should have been sent out last Monday. Better late than never...here it is:

Finally - Nice weather in Michigan this past weekend! Spent some time on the lake and loaded up my beach bag!

First things first, sunscreen. You can wear beach cover ups and long linen pants, but you can't walk around with a bag on your head. I always wear a higher SPF on my face since it sees the most sun (I'm not a fan of hats!). Here is what Mike and I wore on our faces all weekend:

CellCeuticals Photo Defense SPF 55+
I used this while I was in Vegas and it was a scorching 90+ degrees out. I only used it on my face and didn't burn at all while out in the sun by the pool all day. PhotoDefense is meant to protect skin against daily UVA and UVB sun exposure while simultaneously combating premature skin aging and moisturizing. This didn't turn my face white, went on smooth, absorbed quickly, and didn't break me out!
$45

La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid
I love love love La Roche-Posay sunscreen. They don't mess around with their products. It's designed for normal to combination skin, super light and has a matte finish. This one didn't break me out either.

This fluid provides SPF 60 and broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with breakthrough Cell-Ox Shield, to protect skin. Other benefits and pluses: High UVA protection, water-resistant, helps protect skin from sun damage, fragrance free, non-comedogenic and tested on sensitive skin.
$27.90

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30
Quick warning: this is not to be used alone for sunblock for your face. I love this stuff, but it's not the only lotion I use when out in the sun all day. This is my DAILY moisturizer and it is divine. It gives my skin a dewy look, but without making me look or feel greasy. It moisturizes really well and doesn't break me out. I can use it by itself with just some blush or a bronzer and don't feel the need for foundation. I love using it alone, I feel like I'm giving my skin some room to breath!

My dermatologist turned me on to Aveeno and I use it for body lotion (Positively Smooth smells great!), facial lotion and face wash (Ultra Calming Cleanser).

Find Your SPF Number

Going in the sun this summer? This article is a must read. Paula Begoun from The Cosmetics Cop writes about how to find your perfect SPF number. It's pretty lengthy, so grab a cup of coffee and enjoy!

**********************************************

The Basics
Sun protection is an everyday must for anyone concerned with keeping their skin in top shape (and that includes avoiding wrinkles, brown discolorations, building collagen, keeping skin firm, and even preventing skin cancer). SPF 15 is the minimum rating to look for and greater is better for some skin colors and conditions; all sunscreens must be liberally applied; and UVA protection is critical.

UVA protection depends on the active ingredients in the product you are using so be sure one or more of these active ingredients are included: avobenzone (sometimes listed as butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane), titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, Mexoryl (ecamsule) or, outside the U.S., Tinosorb.

Decisions, Decisions
There are several important factors that influence how you choose and should apply a sunscreen:

  1. How long you are going to be in the sun or sitting next to a window (UVA radiation, the sun's most damaging rays, come through windows). The longer you are going to be in the sun or exposed to UVA radiation via windows the higher the SPF number you need to look for.
  2. Are you willing to apply your chosen sunscreen liberally? No matter what SPF rating you choose, you have to apply it liberally. If you aren't applying it liberally always go for a higher number to assure you are getting as much sunscreen ingredients on your skin as possible.
  3. Will you be swimming or perspiring heavily? If so, go for sunscreens labeled water resistant or very water resistant. Be sure to reapply as directed, especially after toweling off.

You'll also want to take into consideration your skin type and whether or not you'll be wearing makeup.

  1. Those with normal to dry skin should use sunscreens in a lotion or cream base.
  2. Those with oily or combination skin should go for sunscreens formulated in a lightweight lotion with a matte finish, a liquid, or an alcohol-free gel base. Many spray-on sunscreens are excellent for oily skin.
  3. If you're going to be wearing foundation, you can choose a foundation with sunscreen and pair it with a moisturizer with sunscreen and a pressed powder with sunscreen!
What's Your Rating?
Your ideal SPF number is a multiplication figure based on your skin color and the SPF number on the product.

REGARDLESS OF YOUR SKIN COLOR AND HOW EASILY YOU TAN, WRINKLES, SKIN DISCOLORATIONS, AND SKIN CANCERS ARE PRIMARILY CAUSED BY UNPROTECTED SUN EXPOSURE!

Next, Do the Math:

  • Your Level of Sunburn Risk x by the SPF Rating = Safe Sun Exposure for Your Skin Color
  • The SPF number is a rating that determines how long you can stay in the sun without burning when you wear that product without needing to reapply it. It does not indicate quality of protection, just length of time. Here's how to do the math. If you have:
    • Level 1 skin (very fair): That means you usually get a burn in about 15 to 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
      • SPF 15 x 20 minutes = 300 minutes (5 hours) of protection
      • SPF 30 x 20 minutes = 600 minutes (10 hours) of protection
      • SPF 45 x 20 minutes = 900 minutes (15 hours) of protection
    • Level 2 skin (fair to light): That means you usually get a burn in about 30 minutes of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
      • SPF 15 x 30 minutes = 450 minutes (7.5 hours) of protection
      • SPF 30 x 30 minutes = 900 minutes (15 hours) of protection
      • SPF 45 x 30 minutes = 1,350 minutes (22.5 hours) of protection
    • Level 3 skin (light to medium/olive): That means you usually get a burn in about 40 minutes of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
      • SPF 15 x 40 minutes = 600 minutes (10 hours) of protection
      • SPF 30 x 40 minutes = 1,200 minutes (20 hours) of protection
      • SPF 45 x 40 minutes = 1,800 minutes (30 hours) of protection
    • Level 4 skin (medium to tan): That means you usually get a burn in about 60 minutes of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
      • SPF 15 x 60 minutes = 900 minutes (15 hours) of protection
      • SPF 30 x 60 minutes = 1,800 minutes (30 hours) of protection
      • SPF 45 x 60 minutes = 2,700 minutes (45 hours) of protection
    • Level 5 and Level 6 skin (brown to dark brown or black): That means you usually get a burn in about 120 minutes (2 hours) of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
      • SPF 15 x 120 minutes = 1.800 minutes (*30 hours) of protection
      • SPF 30 x 120 minutes = 3,600 minutes (60 hours) of protection
      • SPF 45 x 120 minutes = 5,400 minutes (90 hours) of protection
*Note that level 5 and 6 skin should do just fine with a well-formulated sunscreen rated SPF 15. However, liberal applications is still important. If you do not think you'll be applying the sunscreen as liberally as you should, consider a sunscreen rated SPF 30.
